Not far away was Burrishoole Abbey ruin, which they also call a friary, founded in 1469. The town of Burrishoole was a thriving port on Clew Bay with trade exceeding Galway back in those days. [Later note: I finally found out the difference between a friary and an abbey! This one had no abbot in charge, only friars lived here, so it should not really be called an abbey but instead it is really a friary.]
